    Othonna retrofracta stem and leaves
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Louis Jordaan

The succulent stem of Othonna retrofracta is a swollen, flask-shaped to cylindrical caudex covered in coarse bark that may peel.

In picture the leaves are clustered at the tips of small side-branches. The narrow blades and their somewhat symmetrical, equally narrow lobes curve slightly lengthwise (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iNaturalist; http://pza.sanbi.org).
