A stand of Strumaria truncata plants in habitat may be large, these plants forming big colonies that thrive particularly on south-facing slopes.

Winter growing and summer dormant, the species is confined to the winter rainfall region. Good rain years result in notable flowering of these plants (Manning and Goldblatt, 1997; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iNaturalist; JSTOR; https://www.pacificbulbsociety.org; http://pza.sanbi.org; http://www.llifle.com).
