Pelargonium citronellum floral past and future
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Thabo Maphisa

Green, pointed Pelargonium citronellum buds still to bloom and papery brown spent flower remains in the throes of fruiting appear together in the inflorescences of the photo. Proper open flowers are not present, the plant represented by its floral past and future. Flowers are fleeting phenomena in the lives of plants, like good deeds in the lives of people.

An empty inflorescence base or frame in the form of pointy brown involucral bracts spreading from the peduncle top can be detected in the bottom left of the picture. The more durable frame accentuates the temporal feature of flowering (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iNaturalist).
