The petioled leaves of the deciduous Erythrina acanthocarpa are trifoliolate or compound, comprising three leaflets on longish, wiry and often hairy petiolules, longer on the central leaflet.
The leaf-shape is roundish, variably roundly based and flat- or square-topped with small, protruding central tip that tapers abruptly. The pale green, young blades are hairy on both sides, older leaves darker green. The leaflet midribs and ascending lateral veins are prominent on the lower leaf surfaces. Leaflet diameter is about 2,5 cm.
Numerous hooked, sharp, purplish-black prickles are present on the stems and fruit constricted pods (Coates Palgrave, 2002; Gledhill, 1981; iNaturalist; https://treesa.org).
