    Erythrina afra inflorescences
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Francelle van Zyl

The brown hubs of these Erythrina afra inflorescences seen from the top consist of the calyces of buds yet to open and of the flowers in their prime, positioned lower down in the racemes.

The flaring, banner petals flaming orange red from the sepal covers dominate the view among the bare branches not yet leaf-clothed. Flower clusters become about 10 cm long. There is a cream-flowering form of this tree (Coates Palgrave, 2002; Van Wyk and Van Wyk, 1997; Pooley, 1993; iNaturalist).
