    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Francelle van Zyl

Erythrina afra leaflet tips vary in the amount that they attenuate. Some are blunter, others drawn out longer to acute points.

In contrast, the banner petal tips in picture curve back and bulge near their tips. The red petals emerge from squat, brown calyces, while the leaves grow on long petioles, up to 16 cm in length. Some needle-like, persistent styles in picture remain from old flowers that have lost their petals.

The pale grey to brownish grey upper stem parts in picture are coarse or gnarled, mainly from lost leaves (Coates Palgrave, 2002; Van Wyk and Van Wyk, 1997; Pooley, 1993; iNaturalist).
