Grewia hexamita

The giant raisin, Grewia hexamita is deciduous, sometimes a shrub, sometimes a small tree of 5 m tall (SA Tree List No. 460). It has deeply bi-lobed fruit that are edible, although very little flesh around the seeds is offered to the hungry. 

The giant raisin grows in KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, Swaziland, Mozambique and southern Zimbabwe.

The habitat is low altitude woodland and along watercourses or water rich land. The species is not considered to be threatened in its habitat early in the twenty first century (Coates Palgrave, 2002; http://redlist.sanbi.org).
