Monsonia multifida is a dwarf shrublet growing only to 10 cm in height. It has succulent branches of between 1 cm and 2 cm in diameter, extending horizontally. The stems may be light or dark coloured. The plant has a semi-erect habit, rarely growing beyond 20 cm in height. This plant grows in a small distribution around the Gariep River mouth.

The leaves are deeply divided into closely spaced narrow, oblong segments, giving a frilly impression. White woolly hairs of a fine texture cover the leaves densely.

The stems of this species of bushmans candle are usually not spined (Williamson, 2010; Manning, 2009; www.plantzafrica.com).
