Osteospermum monstrosum is an aromatic annual that grows from 20 cm to 50 cm in height. The stems and leaves are covered in gland-tipped hairs.

The distribution of the species ranges from southern Namibia through the Northern Cape to the Western Cape, as far south as the Cape Peninsula and east to the Little Karoo.

The habitat is varied, the plants often found in disturbed places; absent from fynbos. The species is not considered to be threatened in its habitat early in the twenty first century (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2010; Manning, 2007; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iNaturalist; http://redlist.sanbi.org).
