The lower parts of the stem of Vachellia exuvialis loses its flaky characteristic. The stem may become 8 cm in diameter and multi-stemmed specimens occur. The bark at the base acquires different shades of grey or brown over the trees lifetime. Some longitudinal fissuring is seen.

The distribution of V. exuvialis lies in the north-east of South Africa, in parts of Limpopo and Mpumalanga. The species also grows in the south-east of Zimbabwe and parts of western Mozambique. Its habitat is grassy woodland, stony slopes and rocky outcrops of the Lowveld (Carr, 1976; Coates Palgrave, 2002).
