The leaf hairiness of the skaapvygie, Delosperma calycinum, is visible in this photo taken in the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden in June.

Various leaf colours can be seen in the photo. It is the dry season in Johannesburg, suggested by the yellowing of older leaves and the red tips of others. Watering in the Botanical Garden has, however, brought new sprouts in fresh green colours; opportunism not being a human trait only.

Flowering is said to occur irregularly, probably after any rain or, for those being so fortunate, after garden watering.
