Kumara haemanthifolia, previously known as Aloe haemanthifolia, may be admired by many, but can be cultivated successfully only by a select few in possession of advanced horticultural skills and unusual garden conditions.

Molecular studies indicated that the two South African species of Kumara, viz. K. haemanthifolia and K. plicatilis do not share the same ancestor as the other Aloe species. This necessitated the move back to an old genus of Kumara; the origin of the name being unknown.

In habitat K. haemanthifolia is a robust grower. This stemless plant is endemic to high mountain slopes and peaks of the southwestern Cape. The species enjoys some protection from its out of the way distribution, although some collectors without consideration for nature or law continue to get there (Van Wyk and Smith, 2003; Reynolds, 1974; iSpot).
