The tiny, heart-shaped leaves of Adenandra brachyphylla grow stalkless in a pattern around the stems. The specific name, brachyphylla, reflects something of the leaf-shape: brachy meaning short and phyllum leaved in Greek.

Subspecies of A. brachyphylla have been isolated, viz. subsp. heterophylla and subsp. glandulosa. The latter has rounded leaves and many glands upon the lower leaf surfaces (Bean and Johns, 2005; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iSpot; JSTOR; Andrew, 2012).
