The twining stems of Cyphia digitata grow annually from the edible tuber. The baroe colloquial name of the plant was given by the Khoi tribes that roamed the veld and ate the tubers before European influence brought botany that took local plant knowledge to new places (Manning, 2009; Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2010).
