    Gardenia thunbergia fruit and calyx

    Gardenia thunbergia fruit and calyx
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Thabo Maphisa

This developing fruit of Gardenia thunbergia still carries a yellowish elongation at its tip, crowned with the calyx of what has been the flower. Green and pale grey spots mottle the smooth surface of the fruit. It will be hard when fully developed, a thick fibrous to woody wall around the many seeds produced inside (Coates Palgrave, 2002; Leistner, (Ed.), 2000).
