The trunk of Erythrina afra, the coastal coral tree, may reach a wide girth, even on trees that do not become the tallest. The pale grey or brownish grey bark may retain some sparsely scattered, short, sharp prickles. These are scattered among slight roughness from longitudinal fissuring, also on the ageing main branches that may be positioned fairly low down (Coates Palgrave, 2002; Pooley, 1993; iNaturalist).
