    The male Elegia tectorum plant bears many spikelets in an inflorescence. They are deep brown or black, clustering at the nodes and spiralling around the stiff green axis.

    The spathes soon drop off, the anthers not protruding from the flowers. The hard bracts below are shorter than the flowers (Dorrat-Haaksma and Linder, 2012; Manning 2007).
