Haemanthus coccineus umbel

The many-flowered head of Haemanthus coccineus is borne upon a sturdy pale green peduncle or scape covered in random dark red spots. When flowering, the plant may be 37 cm in height, but could also be as short as 6 cm.

From four to thirteen spathe bracts, stiff, red and leathery with blunt tips that curve in, surround the numerous small flowers in the inflorescence, the umbel. The stamens and styles may be exserted or included in the cylindrical perianth tubes of the individual flowers.

The translucent berries that follow are ovoid in shape, white or pink, from 12 mm to 15 mm in diameter. The seed is purplish red, up to 1 cm in diameter (Duncan, et al, 2016).
