Lachenalia punctata

Lachenalia punctata, in Afrikaans commonly the sandviooltjie (sand lachenalia or literally little sand violin), used to be called scientifically L. rubida and L. rubida var. punctata at various times. The bulbous perennial produces annual above-ground growth from 6 cm to 25 cm tall.

The species distribution is from the Northern Cape around Kleinzee to the Western Cape in a narrow coastal swathe to the Cape Peninsula and eastwards to near George, also inland to Vanrhynsdorp, Clanwilliam and Piketberg.

The plants grow on sandy flats and slopes, often near the sea and in fynbos. The habitat population is deemed of least concern early in the twenty first century (Manning, 2009; Bean and Johns, 2005; Manning and Goldblatt, 1996; iNaturalist; http://redlist.sanbi.org).
