The leaf of Lachenalia mutabilis sheathes the stem and arches up and outwards. Sometimes green and unmarked as here, maroon blotches are often scattered on the outer surface of the lower part of the leaf of some plants.
Crinkly margins occur as in the photo, while plants bearing their lance-shaped leaf with smooth margins are also found. Channelling of the leaf caused by its upturned margins also varies.
The specific name mutabilis is a Latin word meaning changeable, mutable or inconstant, an appropriate designation for both flowers and leaves of this plant (Manning, 2007; iNaturalist).
