    Rhigozum zambesiacum leaves
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Piet Grobler

The small leaves of Rhigozum zambesiacum grow opposite or clustered on short spur-branches, immediately below a single spine. The leaf petiole is 4 mm to 9 mm long, but there are no leaflet petiolules; the rachis is winged.

The leaves are compound, growing one to five leaflet pairs as well as a terminal one. The leaflet shape is obovate with rounded tip, sometimes notched or hair-tipped, the base narrowly tapering. The leaflet margins are entire and the dark green, leathery, hairless blade may fold in slightly along its whitish midrib. Leaflet dimensions are 5 mm to 9 mm long and 3 mm to 5 mm wide (Coates Palgrave, 2002; Schmidt, et al, 2002; Van Wyk and Van Wyk, 1997; Pooley, 1993).
