Terminalia prunioides fruit

In season the fruit of Terminalia prunioides hang in conspicuous clusters on longish stalks from the upper branches.

Each fruit consists of a hard nut surrounded by a stiff, oval, flat wing. The ripe fruit varies in colour from bright plum-red to purplish red. It is sometimes slightly wrinkled and dries to brown.

The fruit, or rather its wing, becomes from 4 cm to 6 cm long and from 2 cm to 3 cm wide, the nut bulging in its centre (Coates Palgrave, 2002; Van Wyk and Van Wyk, 1997).
