The female Encephalartos latifrons cone bulges barrel-shaped in its centre. The plant cones in midsummer, not necessarily every year. The cone surface is pale beige with some red-brown near the scale bases. There is a horizontal ridge through each scale peaking at its tip. The tip protrudes on scales towards the top, flattened on those low down.

The curved leaves from the woolly stem bearing lobed leaflets are typical of E. latifrons (Hugo, 2014; Coates Palgrave, 2002; https://pza.sanbi.org).
