    Ilex mitis var. mitis bark

    Ilex mitis var. mitis bark
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Thabo Maphisa

Seen closely, the Ilex mitis var. mitis bark on a large tree is in parts either whitish grey or pale, pinkish purple in colour on the section in picture. Thin, parallel, horizontal ridges are unevenly present, discontinued irregularly into small, smooth patches.

Rough bulging spots are scattered on and off the ridges. They are probably past and failed leaf and small branch growth remains that amounted to very little.
