The wiry Ixia polystachya plant annually bears a few narrow, more strap-shaped than sword-shaped leaves with visible midribs. The lowest leaves are cataphylls. Some leaves in picture are longer than the inflorescence is tall, not always rigid enough to remain erect.
In flower the wiry plant with branched or unbranched stem may be from 30 cm to 80 cm in height (Manning, 2007; Leistner, (Ed.), 2000; iNaturalist).
