Ficus abutilifolia stems

The stems of Ficus abutilifolia are often twisted, branching from low down. The small branchlets are thick to their tips, showing conspicuous leaf scars below the lowest retained leaves. A stem injury will cause the milky latex contained in the plant to appear.

The bark is pale, whitish grey or yellowish grey. A fairly smooth surface, some transversal lines around the stems are visible in the photo, as well as scattered small bulges, some flaking and the occasional gnarled patch. All these contribute to the slight coarseness of the stem. A fair amount of colour variation is also visible along the stems in picture.

The wood of F. abutilifolia is light and tough, pale brown with a yellowish tint (Coates Palgrave, 2002; Schmidt, et al, 2002; Pooley, 1993).
