Yellow discolouring of the uppermost, the involucral leaves below the red female fruiting cones at the stem tips, is evident on most stems of the Leucadendron salignum shrub in picture. The bracts on the cone will release their powerful grip and open when prompted by fire.
Leaf length varies considerably on this plant seen near Barrydale. The hairless long and narrow leaves away from the cones are pale green, spreading more than they ascend (Manning, 2007; iSpot).
