Lachenalia canaliculata usually grows two dark green, lance-shaped leaves curving out high or low beside the stem. The leaves are often covered in dark purple or magenta spots on their lower surfaces, as is the main leaf in picture: broad, smooth with dark blotches that mostly connect into transversal bands.

The second leaf is sheathed opposite to and inside the first one, smaller and erect next to the inflorescence in picture.

A long, thin leaf is present in the photo next to the big one. It is from a secondary bulb recently grown from the main one (Leistner, (Ed.), 2000; iNaturalist; www.pacificbulbsociety.org).
