    Spring, the season of new life, is exciting in fynbos as in many ecologies on earth. In temperate regions where the contrast between summer and winter is significant in features of temperature and rainfall, spring heralds an exuberant flourish of flowers and young leaves in many species.

    Some plants hang back, bringing nectar and pollen to appreciative pollinators during the lean times of the year. It is the profusion of spring life that facilitates planned family expansion of many animal species, capitalising on easy access to food supplies.

    Sensing the abundance of so much youth lifts the spirit of all that is willing, at no cost. A sunny October morning in the Harold Porter National Botanical Garden serves to convince visitors of these things.
