This plant, thought to be Polygala virgata, sprouts at ground level from several stems. The species is described as being single-stemmed, which raises the question of a possible identification error.
Or, as the plant grows in what appears to be a busy area of the Caledon Wildflower Garden, another explanation may be reasonable: It is just possible that some damage, something like trampling may have befallen it early on, causing the aberrant growth form.
