Lessertia argentea or the strandertjiesbos (beach peas bush) is a low-growing herb of the southwest coast of the Western Cape.
The small, blue-green leaflets curve and use hairiness as well as their dull colouring to limit water loss in the demanding conditions prevailing much of the time on exposed coastal sands. The plants stay alive here, readily delivering their spring flowers in small inflorescences for the benefit of insects and aesthetes.
The erect racemes grow from leaf axils, the peduncles sturdy for coping with the wind that is common in these parts (Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iNaturalist; JSTOR).
