This Amphibolia laevis plant was flowering in the sand near the sea at Tietiesbaai in September. Small black, flying insects were visiting momentarily, apparently finding food of interest in the flowers at the time.
The generic name of the plant, Amphibolia, is derived from the Greek word amphibolos meaning doubtful, derived from the initial uncertainty about the need for another genus, or whether the Amphibolia plants could simply be lumped together with the related Stoeberia ones.
The more categories in taxonomy, the more border areas among the taxons, constituting uncertainty or grey areas. This is the bane of the lives of those trying to make sense in plant taxonomy when speciation is still under way, the separation a matter of debate to be determined by genetic investigation (Le Roux, et al, 2005; Smith, et al, 1998; iNaturalist; Wikipedia).
