The crown of a large Diospyros mespiliformis tree as seen from below soon becomes familiar to Kruger National Park visitors on hot days. Dense jackal-berry shade by the roadside beckons in the heat; whether some animal or bird has been spotted or not.

Those accustomed to cold climates may find midday temperatures in the Kruger hot during all seasons. This photo was taken in mid-July, i.e. midwinter and the tree still offers ample chance for escaping the sun. Jackal-berry trees replace their leaves quickly in winter, obliging their many fans (Grant, et al, 2001; Venter and Venter, 1996; Van Wyk and Van Wyk, 1997).
