Chacma baboons display adoptive behaviour in their pre-reproductive life phase. An orphaned young one will be carried, groomed and defended against harassment from other members of the troop and the many dangers of bush life. The parenting substitute may be male or female; caring for either a male or a female young one and will sleep near the protégé.
Baboons also form functional friendships. A lactating female will form a liaison with an adult male to protect her baby from other alpha males in the troop that have tendencies of committing infanticide.
Baboon troops are adapted to about every South African habitat, from Cape Peninsula fynbos, Kruger National Park woodland as seen in this picture, to Drakensberg grassland, the semi-desert of the Kalahari and the different faces of the Karoo (Wikipedia).
