Anacampseros arachnoides translucent leaves

These semi-translucent leaves of Anacampseros arachnoides, replete with succulence at the end of winter, were found hidden under a dense shrub in the Little Karoo near Oudtshoorn. Vestiges of the white hairs are visible that produce the cobwebby leaf covering that justifies the arachnoides specific name meaning spider-like, probably intended to be cobweb-like.

The pointed leaves have some transversal folds along their upper surfaces, suggesting that rain might cause them to distend. Leaf colour varies from dull green to a pale, yellowish fawn.
