Combretum zeyheri fruits

The winged fruits of Combretum zeyheri are comparatively large as South African Combretum species go. The common shape is, however, still there. It is possible occasionally to find three-winged fruits among the normal four-winged ones.

The wings of C. zeyheri fruit may have a slight sheen and be coarsely corrugated. The colour is initially pale green, drying out to become brown or straw-coloured. The body of the fruit is slightly darker than the wings. The fruits usually measure about 6 cm to 8 cm wide and 6 cm to 8 cm tall. They may be found on the tree from the end of summer to mid-spring (Coates Palgrave, 2002; Schmidt, et al, 2002; Carr, 1988; Van Wyk and Van Wyk, 1997).
