Crassula congesta subsp. congesta grows decussate leaf pairs closely stacked upon the short, erect stem. The leaves are flat on the inner triangular surface, angularly keeled near the tip.

Grey-green when watered, these reddish leaves photographed in habitat near Oudtshoorn experience water need on the Minwater farm in April at the end of the dry season. Mottling brings roughness to the leaf surfaces, the whitish bloom diminishes it (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2010).
