    Ochna serrulata flowering

    Ochna serrulata flowering
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Francelle van Zyl

The opening Ochna serrulata bud, prominent above the open flowers in picture, shows its rounded sepal tips partly retracted from the expanding bulge of the yellower corolla emerging in the centre.

In the open flowers the somewhat wavy petals spread much wider than the numerous yellow stamens. The petals are short-lived. There may be up to 40 stamens in one flower. The anthers are attached to the thinner, yellowish filaments at their base ends, not in the centre. The stamens point in the same directions as the petals below them, outwards where pollinators may be contacted (Venter, 2012; Coates Palgrave, 2002; Pooley, 1993; iNaturalist; https://treesa.org).
