Ochna pretoriensis

Ochna pretoriensis, commonly known as the Magalies redwood and in Afrikaans as the Magaliesrooihout (Magalies redwood), is usually a much-branched shrub, sometimes a small tree of about 3,5 m in height (SA Tree List No. 480.2).

The distribution is in the South African provinces north of the Vaal River and in Botswana, particularly common around Pretoria.

The habitat is bushveld in shallow soil on rocky outcrops and ridges. The habitat population is deemed of least concern early in the twenty first century.

The tree resembles O. inermis that has wider leaves and grows mainly further to the north and northeast (Coates Palgrave, 2002; Schmidt, et al, 2002; iNaturalist; www.plantzafrica.com; https://redlist.sanbi.org).
