Ochna pretoriensis, commonly the Magalies plane and in Afrikaans Magaliesrooihout (Magalies redwood), is usually a much-branched shrub, sometimes a small tree of about 3,5 m in height (SA Tree List No. 480.2).

The distribution is in the South African provinces north of the Vaal River and in Botswana. The trees habitat is shallow bushveld soil on rocky outcrops and ridges. The species is not considered to be threatened in its habitat early in the twenty first century.

    O. pretoriensis is particularly common around Pretoria and similar to O. inermis that has wider leaves and grows further to the north and northeast (Coates Palgrave, 2002; Schmidt, et al, 2002; www.plantzafrica.com; www.redlist.sanbi.org).
