Ochna holstii

Ochna holstii, commonly known red ironwood, is a variable shrub or small tree reaching heights from 3 m to 7 m (SA Tree List No. 480).

The distribution is from the Eastern Cape through KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga to Limpopo and North West; also widespread in tropical Africa.

The habitat is forests, wooded kloofs and river valleys, sometimes in open areas, often among rocks. The habitat population is deemed of least concern early in the twenty first century.

The bark of this tree has been used medicinally (Coates Palgrave, 2002; Schmidt, et al, 2002; iNaturalist; https://redlist.sanbi.org).
