Oedera capensis, not the neatest daisy

Oedera capensis, not the neatest daisy

Oedera capensis is a resprouter growing multiple stems from ground level. Some other species like O. genistifolia and O. imbricata have single stems, meaning that they reseed after fire. In general an abundance of Oedera plants indicates veld that has been suffering or mismanaged, usually overgrazed.

The rigid, pointed leaves tend to be prickly. The ray florets in the photo are not quite forming one neat ring around the disc that comprises many small flowerheads rather than single disc florets. In this species there are often parts of a few jagged rows of rays, none of which is regular or complete; even the rays themselves are not identical in shape and size (Bean and Johns, 2005; Manning, 2007).
