Moraea miniata flower from the side

The salmon-yellow Moraea miniata flower spreads its six ovate tepals around the shallow indentation of the deep-yellow star covered in dark speckles. The slightly sagging tepal tips are rounded to bluntly pointed and concave above with fine, indented vein lines that run straight to the margin. The flower diameter is up to 4,5 cm.

The filaments cohere in an erect central column, ending in the yellow anthers. The broadened base of the white filament column is hairy. The stamens stand up to 8 mm tall.

The usual two, channelled leaves are present, as is the unequal pair of green bracts around the flower base and the bud or old flower.

This plant was seen north of Springbok in August (Manning, 2007; Le Roux, et al, 2005; iNaturalist).
