The leaves of Oxalis obtusa grow in a basal tuft on the stemless perennial. Three leaflets join at each petiole tip. Children like the game of searching for leaves with four or five leaflets, which are less common to see, as in the lucky four-leaf clover.
Leaves are heart-shaped, two rounded lobes pointing outwards on each leaflet; the point at the base. The leaf colour varies. It may be pale green or bluish green to yellow-green or reddish brown. Leaves may be glabrous (hairless) or covered in fine, short hairs. The leaf petioles (stalks) are jointed and covered in hairs that point downwards (Manning, 2009; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984).
