The frilly and hairy leaves of Monsonia herrei are grey-green, deeply incised, finely lobed. The tiny lobes are mostly positioned erectly, fern-like or resembling the leaflets of the sweet thorn, Vachellia karroo. The leaves become up to 2,5 cm long.
The long, sturdy leaf petioles harden and persist after the blades drop off, projecting beyond the leaves as grey, often blunt-tipped spines.
As the flowers, the leaves also exude an aroma (Williamson, 2010; Leistner, (Ed.), 2000; iNaturalist; http://llifle.com).
