Plectranthus saccatus var. saccatus

This plant is probably Plectranthus saccatus var. saccatus, the typical variety of the species. It is a soft shrub bearing semi-succulent leaves, the lower stems becoming woody.

The variety is variable in leaf texture and flower colour. The flower tubes are wider than those of var. longitubus.

Var. saccatus is found in a mostly coastal distribution in the central and southern parts of KwaZulu-Natal and along the east coast of the Eastern Cape.

The habitat is rocky forested places where the plants grow in shade and semi-shade. The variety is not considered threatened in its habitat early in the twenty first century (Pooley, 1998; iNaturalist; http://redlist.sanbi.org).
