Pelargonium gibbosum is a scrambling shrub that has thick and later woody stems below, reaching heights from 30 cm to 2 m. It the name gouty geranium or arthritic geranium and dikbeenmalva (thick leg geranium) in Afrikaans, on account of the swollen stem nodes.
The species distribution is coastal in the west of South Africa from the Richtersveld in the Northern Cape to the Western Cape, as far as the Cape Peninsula.
The plants grow in coastal sandy soil among fynbos, succulent Karoo or shrubs and rocks in full sun. The habitat population is deemed of least concern early in the twenty first century (Manning, 2007; Manning and Goldblatt, 1996; iNaturalist; www.bihrmann.com; http://redlist.sanbi.org).
