Pelargonium schlechteri buds and calyces

The spider-leg kinks in the pedicels of the Pelargonium schlechteri flowers, first green, then purple, appear in the buds only after some elongation.

In bud, the five narrow, purple sepals of each flower taper to acutely pointed tips, contrasted against the creamy outsides of the furled petals that gradually push them aside. An empty calyx that has lost its innards early shows its shape clearly.

In the open flowers the sepal lobe insides are visible in the gaps between the petals. They reveal hairiness and slightly lighter colouring (Pooley, 1998; iNaturalist; https://www.pelargonium.si).
