    Pachycarpus scaber grows a few stems to 60 cm in height. The leaves are elliptic-oblong to ovate, growing on short petioles. Leaves are hairless and rough in texture on the margins and below.

    The species occurs widely in open, rocky grassland of the eastern regions of South Africa, from the Eastern Cape to Mpumalanga. This photo was taken in Swaziland during November. The species is not considered to be threatened in its habitat early in the twenty first century (Manning, 2009; iSpot; JSTOR; www.redlist.sanbi.org).
