Phylica lanata is a single-stemmed shrub reaching heights around 1 m. It may grow many long, erect stems branching from low down.
The species distribution is inland in the Western Cape, endemic to montane parts of the Little Karoo, particularly the Witteberg and the Swartberge. The photo was taken at Minwater near Oudtshoorn.
The habitat is dry and rocky upper fynbos slopes, the soil sandstone derived. The species is not considered threatened in habitat early in the twenty first century (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iNaturalist; http://redlist.sanbi.org).
