In habitat Pteronia pallens, among other names called the Scholtzbos, seems to drop leaves easily during the dry summer season. Scars where they have disappeared are visible on the plant in picture, just below the new growth and even on the green stem parts near the tips. Lower down, the stems are grey, gnarled and woody.

Channelling is present upon the upper surfaces of the narrow, thread-like leaves. The leaves on this plant twist randomly in all directions and fashions; some of the agonised yellow ones look as if they will soon contribute to the ground cover under the bush.

This plant was seen at the Minwater farm near Oudtshoorn in August. There will be more new growth as well as flowers when spring becomes summer.
